What to Bring

Wine & Beer With Indian Food

Not sure what to bring? These matches work well with the dishes on our dine-in menu.

Mild & creamy

Butter Chicken, Korma, Mango Chicken: An off-dry Riesling, a lightly oaked Chardonnay or a crisp lager.

Rich & slow-cooked

Lamb Rogan Josh, Goat Curry, beef dishes: A medium-bodied Shiraz or Grenache blend, or an amber ale.

Smoky, from the tandoor

Tandoori Chicken, Chicken Tikka, Seekh Kabab: A dry rosé, a Pinot Noir or a pale ale.

Hot

Madras and Vindaloo: Something cold and lower in alcohol: an off-dry Riesling or a lager. Chilli makes high-alcohol reds taste hotter.

Vegetarian

Palak Paneer, Dal Makhani, Veg Biryani: An aromatic white such as Gewürztraminer or a Semillon Sauvignon Blanc.

Choosing a Bottle

Four Rules for Wine With Curry

Keep the alcohol moderate when the food is hot

Chilli and alcohol amplify each other. A big 15% Shiraz next to a vindaloo tastes hotter and harsher than either does on its own. With hot dishes, choose something cold and lighter: an off-dry Riesling around 11–12%, a lager or a pale ale.

Go easy on tannin

Firm, grippy reds clash with chilli and turn bitter against spice. If you want red wine, pick a soft, fruity style such as Grenache, Pinot Noir or a young Shiraz blend, and save the cellar-worthy Cabernet for another night.

Match weight with weight

Creamy dishes like butter chicken, korma and malai kofta suit a fuller white with a little texture, such as Chardonnay or Viognier. Smoky tandoori dishes suit a dry rosé or Pinot Noir. Slow-cooked lamb and goat curries can take a medium-bodied red.

When in doubt, bring two

Most tables share several dishes, so one bottle rarely suits everything. An aromatic white plus a light red, or a white plus a six-pack of lager, covers a mixed order. Not drinking? Our mango, masala and sweet lassis are on the menu, and so is lemon lime bitters.

Planning a group dinner

BYO makes Spicy Affair a popular choice for birthdays and work dinners. Tables go quickly on Friday and Saturday nights, so book ahead online or call (08) 6162 8767 for larger groups. Platters and a couple of biryanis are an easy way to feed a crowd; see the dine-in menu and our guest reviews.
